What caught me off guard was the flourishing art scene. Key West isn't just another tourist town; it's a haven for creativity. From sunrise to starlight, live music fills the air, transitioning from soulful singer-songwriter tunes at brunch slips into funky beats after dark. You can feel the reason why so many artists and writers have been drawn to this island for over a hundred years. It feels familiar but just on the very edge and fringes of the US. It feels warm, free, quite and full of creative possibilities.
What inspired me the most was staying with a musician friend in an old colonial home which once belonged to the amazing artist and print designer, Suzie Zuzek. She's the genius behind those iconic Florida-tastic prints that defined Lilly Pulitzer in the '60s-'80s. This historic home, a sanctuary for traveling artists then and now, radiates the energy of countless creators. The house’s spirit is light like the purpose is the act of creating art and not getting lost in the cut-throat world of selling it or producing polished promotions for it. Staying here helped me refind my north. My spirit for creation. It was a soul-rejuvenating experience, the catalyst that ignited the spark for this art venture.
So here's a heartfelt cheers to Suzie and the artistic spirit of Key West.
